After a season in which he won his first World Cup and ended the year as the top American competitor on the circuit, Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, ME) hasn't slowed down one bit. With trips to Alaska, Costa Rica, and a new house almost ready to be moved into, Wescott is finding himself right where he wants to be on the cusp of an Olympic season.
So, where have you been since the season wrapped up?
I did the usual Alaska heli trip for April. It was a really productive trip. I got some good footage, still shots and it was a good way to wrap up my on-snow season. I also ran a few new lines I hadn't done before, which really made it a good trip.
After a month in Alaska where did you end up?
I went to Costa Rica. I spent 24 days in the water and just loved it. It was good to get that much surf time in and it was a kick start to the whole summer training program. I came out of there feeling super healthy and stoked for summer.
You also spent some time in Hollywood doing some pre-Olympic work with NBC, right?
The L.A. NBC trip was fun. I thought it was really good as far as getting me to consciously think about the Olympics for a few days. It gave me that spark of motivation for what next winter is really all about, what I have to look forward to and what I am aiming for.
And now, after all the traveling you've done, are you finally home?
I just got home and have been in full-on golf mode. I have played about 90 holes in the last five days. I also played a couple tournaments.
We heard there are also some new digs in the near future for you.
I'm finishing up building my house. I've been here staining the deck and the entryway and stairs. I've been cleaning windows all day and am probably a week or two from moving in. I am psyched to wrap it up. I'm finally going to have a home and a good operating base.
You also run your restaurant The Rack in Sugarloaf, right? Have you been back to work yet this summer?
I've been working at the restaurant now that I'm home. It's good to get reconnected there. It's a part of my life when I'm home. It's fun and I like being a part of it. It's all a part of what's grounding me when I'm back here at home.
So, all the travel and play aside, you've got some real work to do, right?
Now I've got to buckle down and get motivated for summer training. I'm happy to start getting prepared for next year.
And, with the training, are you getting pumped for the Olympics?
I'm just fired up. It's so cool to be back within an Olympic year cycle. I think I am going to go to Switzerland in the next couple weeks to get all my race boards built up by Kessler. I'm excited to get that done so that I can feel like everything is in place.
Is winning the gold again even a thought in your mind?
Coming off a year like last year and getting to a place where I felt like I gained my mental head on what I was doing, I'm psyched. The qualifying is for sure going to be gnarly because our whole team is so good. But, I feel really confident going in to next year to try to defend my gold medal.
