| White Adds Another X Games Gold to Stash
ASPEN, Colo. (Jan. 30) – Shaun White (Carlsbad, CA) won his sixth career X Games gold medal Monday night as he won the superpipe event at X Games Ten. White, who will be off to Italy soon to compete for the U.S. at the Olympics, waited until his third and final run to post his winning score of 91.00. White threw three 1080s in the run. He dragged a hand following a stalefish 1080, but it didn’t make much difference because of his gigantic amplitude. After White’s third run, only U.S. Snowboarding Team rider Louie Vito (Bellefontaine, OH) and Olympic Team member Mason Aguirre (Mammoth Lakes, CA) were left to ride. Vito sat down on his final run and ended up in fifth, but he did pull a stylish handplant to end the run. U.S. Snowboarding’s Scotty Lago (Seabrook, N.H.), riding in his first Winter X Games, took third. With his sixth gold medal, White tied multi-sport athlete Shaun Palmer for the most gold medals in the 10-year history of the Winter X Games. It was White’s third career medal in superpipe (second gold) and second of X Games Ten as he won gold in slopestyle Saturday, his fourth in a row. Aguirre placed first in Sunday’s superpipe qualifying, while Vito was second and White third. Lago came out of the ninth qualifying spot. The pipe was icy as evidenced by the number of slide outs. Chad Otterstrom (Breckenridge, CO) decked out and landed on his hip in practice and could not continue. Finland’s Anti Autti replaced him. X GAMES TEN 1. Shaun White, Carlsbad, Calif., 91.00 | |
